In Vitro

"In Vitro" describes biological studies that are conducted using parts of an organism inside a test tube, culture dish, or anywhere where the tissue has been isolated from its usual biological context. Studies conducted on tissues that remain within the living organism are referred to as "in vivo". In vitro studies are performed in order to provide a more detailed, and in some cases less hazardous, analysis than what can be performed on a living organism.
