Packaging Sacks Made from Thermoplastic Flexible Film and Tear Propagation of Edge Folds (ISO 11897)

The ISO 11897 test method is used to investigate the tear resistance of the edge fold of sacks of a thermoplastic flexible film material. It is suitable for use with a range of materials, including film and sheeting of both flexible and rigid materials.

In principle, the test specimen is carefully clamped and aligned in the center of the grips. The specimen is pulled apart, until failure, at a constant rate of displacement. The load is recorded as the tear propagates through the entire unslit length of the specimen, and is used to calculate the resistance to tear propagation of the material.

We use screw action grips, pneumatic action grips with rubber coated jaw faces for clamping of the material fitted to a tensile testing machine. This testing system is usually of single-column or dual-column table-top design. Using testing software, such as Bluehill® 2, allows you to input specimen details, set the desired test control, automatically calculate the desired results and statistics, and produce a test report all in accordance with the standard.

We suggest reviewing ISO 11897 to fully understand the test fixture and results requirements.
