ASTM D695-15 Compressive Properties of Rigid Plastics
ASTM D695 is a test method used to determine the compressive properties of un-reinforced and reinforced plastics. Using compression platens to apply a force, the properties obtained are compressive strength, compressive yield point, and modulus. The standard specimen for strength determination is a right cylinder or prism whose length is twice its principal width or diameter. If the specimen is too thin, an anti-buckling support jig should be used to prevent the specimen from buckling.
The challenges of testing to this standard are:
- Compressive strain measurement
- Reporting calculations in compliance with the standard
- Compressive strain measurement – A Class B-2 extensometer per ASTM E83 is required by the standard to accurately measure strain. Advanced strain solutions include non-contacting extensometers, such as the Advanced Video Extensometer 2 (AVE 2), and automatic contacting extensometers, such as the AutoX 750. These solutions can result in improved repeatability as they require fewer steps to be performed by the operators. Automatic extensometry does not require the manual attachment or removal of the extensometer, resulting in less operator-influenced issues. Manual strain solutions, such as clip-on extensometers, also meet the measurement accuracy requirements stated in ASTM D695-15.
